I know this is a bit late . . .
Do they still call them the Winter Olympics because they are winter sports/events even though they take place in the summer? What about the Summer Olympics?
It’s still called the Winter Olympics and a couple of Aussie members (including Torah Bright) won golds in Vancouver. In 2000, the Sydney games were still called the Summer Olympics even though it wasn’t really summer there (it was actually spring).
According to the IOC, Winter Olympics sports are those that are performed on snow or ice. It has nothing to do with the season of the year (logically, for the reason you mention).
Summer Olympics occur in late winter/early spring when they happen in the southern hemisphere.
there are regulations about the months of the Olympics, and if they were ever held in the southern hemisphere they would have to be in the winter months.
When the summer Olympics were held in the southern hemisphere they were not held in the winter months.
At least not for the northern hemisphere.
its still called the Winter Olympics. GO USA
